Discover identity
The Identity Pathway supports rangatahi to strengthen their sense of self and belonging — exploring who they are, where they come from, and what grounds them. Each module builds confidence through connection to culture, wellbeing, and purpose. Learning is hands-on and expressive, blending art, movement, kai, and reflection.
Each completed module earns a TOA Identity Milestone — a physical token of progress such as a badge, wristband, pen, or mini certificate. These milestones act as a personal reminder of growth and a collective symbol of achievement. Once all modules in the pathway are completed, rangatahi receive an Identity Pathway Certificate of Completion and are celebrated at a group ceremony.
Modules included
-
Our rangatahi discover self-identity through genealogy, lineage, and descent. Whakapapa facilitates exploration and understanding of who you are from the foundation of your roots. It connects our rangatahi to their ancestors and helps them navigate how history, structure, process, and presence shape self-identity and creative expression through art, literacy, song, music, and spirituality.
Students progress through learning milestones in connection with set projects. -
Whakairo is a powerful cultural practice that teaches patience, focus, and active listening through the art of carving. Rangatahi learn hands-on techniques, understanding the patterns, stories, and symbolism that shape Māori visual language. Each carving becomes a journey of self-discovery — bringing the wood to life through intention, energy, and aroha. This practice builds mindfulness, resilience, and pride in cultural craftsmanship.
-
The Goals & Manifesting module helps rangatahi transform dreams into direction. Through the double diamond design thinking model, reflective exercises, vision boards, and practical goal-setting, students learn how to align their intentions with action. Grounded in both modern psychology and Māori values, this module encourages rangatahi to understand their personal “why,” celebrate milestones, and manifest opportunities that align with their future selves.
-
The Sports, Health & Wellbeing module empowers rangatahi to strengthen both body and mind through physical movement, teamwork, and hauora-based learning. From traditional games to modern fitness and mindfulness, participants explore how exercise, rest, and emotional awareness work together to sustain balance. It’s about more than sport — it’s about cultivating mauri ora (life energy) and self-discipline in everyday life.
-
The International Connection module expands our rangatahi’s worldview — showing how their identity fits within a global context. Through cultural exchange, storytelling, and exposure to other traditions and communities, students build appreciation for diversity while strengthening pride in their own heritage. This module encourages empathy, curiosity, and the ability to see themselves as both local and global citizens, confident in their voice and values wherever they stand.
-
The Kai & Nutrition module teaches rangatahi how food connects to wellbeing, culture, and community. Through hands-on cooking sessions, discussion, and shared kai, students learn about nutrition, meal planning, and the importance of nourishing the body with intention. It’s also a time to connect — breaking bread, sharing stories, and celebrating the role of kai in sustaining both health and identity.
